Playing with toys part 1 - Baby, you can drive my car.

All work and no play makes Jay a dull boy, so…
A recent project (a Jeopardy-style game application) for one of my clients had me playing with buzzers and lights, and getting the buzzers buzzing and the lights lighting through a Flash application. The game turned out to be pretty cool, and left me asking myself what else I can do with Flash based control devices, and how I can throw FMS into the mix somehow.
After a bit of tinkering (and butchering of little toy cars), I came up with this little application:
I’ll have the car running most of the time I’m in the office (or at least, until it becomes a distraction). Please be cool and don’t bump into my feet. Yeah… it’s funny and all, but “Hey… I’m workin’ ova here”.

You got it Hilary… it’s a bit of both actually. It’s a USB connected board (a relay boad) that mounts as a COM device.
Eventually I’ll get around to posting a little tutorial on how I put this together.

I wonder if this could be scaled up to something bigger, so it wouldn’t get stuck on the stone floor part of your office.

Funny you should mention that Mike. I tried with cars of varied sizes up to 1/14 scale, but given the floorspace in the office, the 1/32 car worked out best.
We also have to consider that I need to get a little bit of work done for my clients here and there. A little 4 inch car is easy to ignore when it bounces off my feet (and everyone seems compelled to do it at least once), but something bigger would just be too much.
I like the idea of the obstacle course… maybe I’ll do that for a little while on weekends after I get a few more cars running (that’s the next step… more cars)

Very cool! As a big RC guy, I love the new dimension this adds. I have seen people try this before but it never really worked right - but yours works very nicely.
I would also LOVE to see a tutorial, as I would love to put something like this together with some of my RCs.

You should probably add something where if the person in line doesn’t drive in the first 15-20 seconds of their turn, it moves to someone else, and they get shoved a few spots back in line (or all the way to the back, depending on how mean you are).

@N/A - You are correct. There are a lot of fixes the application could use. This application is really just an exercise, and I didn’t expect such an overwhelming response.
When I have time (the clients’ work has to come before I play with my toys), I’ll put more work into it. For the time being, I guess if someone wanted to be a complete dick and clog up the line with multiple windows they could.

@Robert… funny you should mention that. I was thinking about selling bumper-sticker sized ads along the baseboards to finance new projects (and the bandwidth bill on my server). If the game stays popular for more than a couple of weeks, I think I’ll do that.
What does a foot of baseboard go for these days?

Ha! It’s all about supply and demand. But seeing as how baseboards are a new medium I’d say you could easily get $20 a sticker/month (and probably a lot more). Looks like your office could pull in about $2000.00 or so. Good luck.

This is a brilliant idea. I’ve sent you an email regarding the idea, and what technologies would be needed. Having seen just how effective this can be I’m tempted to play with the basic idea of controlling an RC device from the PC, and would appreciate any/all info you can/will supply.

Well as a small form of payback, I have ordered a mirror for the hummer for Jay. It’s over a foot long and one foot high, it’s a sheet of plastic mirror (well it should be), so Jay can shape/size it how he likes.

Hi! Im 11 and i found this and its so cool. I know VB code to. Like visua; basics mostly. its fun. also i cant wait for a tutorial. To answer some of the questions:
1. No, I’m not getting a cat for you to abuse.
2. Yes, there will be more cars soon. One more in the next couple of weeks, and then a few more early next year.
3. The car is only online when I’m in the office, AND when I don’t need quiet. Remember, I make a living writing code, and I can’t have the car running around when I’m trying to think. The car is usually on 4-6 hours a day, but I don’t think there will be a set schedule any time soon.
4. Yeah… the lines are long and the chat is pretty simplistic. Truth is, the car was originally intended to be a “see if I can do it” sort of project, and I never expected such a response. As time allows, I’ll add features to the chat and more cars to speed up the line, but remember, this is a hobby for me and work has to come first (or I won’t be able to pay for my toys
)
5. “Hey Jay… you should sell ads”. I’d rather keep this a hobby and not turn it in to a money thing. We’ll see how things go, and how much bandwidth and data transfer this thing starts eating up.

Like I mentioned before, there isn’t a set schedule for the car. If there was, people would get all bent out of shape if it’s not online when the schedule says it will be (remember, the car needs to go when I need to concentrate, and there’s no set schedule for that), so I think it’s best that it’s just on when it’s on.

Wow… lots of comments! I’m glad everyone is [for the most part] having fun with the car.
Some answers to questions:
1. Yes, there will be more cars. I’m adding a second car soon, and more in the future.
2. The car is offline a lot of the time, and there is no set schedule to when it will run. Please remember that this is a hobby project of mine, and while I’m glad to open it up to the public and let everyone play, I have to work at least some of the time. So, the car has to be turned off when I need to think.
I try to have the car on for a few hours when I get in to the office, and a few more before I leave, but in the end, it’s on when it’s on.
3. Sorry… these cars aren’t for sale at the moment. The main reason for that is because this isn’t a commercial project right now, but there’s also bunch of hardware and software that would require documentation and instructions… and I hate writing documentation.
4. “My connection to your stupid server was lost, and I lost my place in line”. Well… there’s really not much I can do about that. The servers have been performing as expected, so I assume the problem is that your ISP broke the connection. Unfortunately, there’s not much I can do about that… perhaps there is a more reliable ISP in your area?
5. There will be no cats or other animals placed in the office for you to abuse with the car.
6. There will be no sharp implements affixed to the car.

May I request, if possible, when you need “quiet time” to add to the end of the message around what time you may return? I know at times it may be unpredictable, but it would save me from checking every 5 minutes so I can finally find out when it is online again.

This was amazing, you need obstacles and maybe a better server, it lags.
Also you need like, 2 or more RC cars that people can drive around so you wont have to wait in line that much.

Only problem tho is the fact that how would you set the time for how long you get to play? I doubt anyone would be able to win in that short a time.
Also a good suggestion, set up a couple time cams(5 second updates) in some important corners of the “office” so that people can see where they’re driving and can sorta set goals for where they need to get.
And IF you do do the Battle tank idea, please enclose it in like a 6×4 Foot area and have an overhead cam, it’d be impossible with just the hood cams

Aww, I missed driving today! Oh, well I’ll try again tomorrow. Can’t wait for the 2nd car to be up an running!
A couple questions about the new car:
1 - Will people in line justbe randomized to which car they will drive?
2 - You mentioned it was going to be a split-screen, does that mean that each screen is going to be smaller in size, or will you move the chat box to another spot on the page and have the same size screens side-by-side?
Still, awesome idea. Complete genius! (Still hoping for user/nick names in the chat room :P)

Once the second car is running, both cars will take drivers from the same queue… first come, first served. When it’s your turn, you’ll drive whichever car becomes available first
About the split-screen thing, I think what I’ll do is put the video for the second car under the video for the first car (both videos will be the same size), and make the chat a little taller. Once I get to reworking the driver’s screen I’ll get it all figured out. No matter how things are done, I’ll add some controls so you can turn the video for each car on and off (for people with slower connections).

Jay, I finally had a chance to play around with the car.
It’s crazy good, but the controls are a little sloppy…. I know theres a big delay, and it takes a while to get the car to full speed, but if theres something that could make the controls less sloppy….
I also kind of feel sorry for you having to pick up the car every 3 minutes or so..

Hey, Jay with the 2 cars idea, I think it’d be a good idea to just get rid of the video feed for all but the next 5 drivers in line, and replace it with 5 second update stills.
I dunno about others, but personally, when I’m waiting in line, I just go do other stuff and check back every couple minutes, if I’m within the next 15 then i drive it, otherwise, I just go back to my stuff.

ok i have to say this: Jay sorry for making you pick the car up in 1 sitting i fliped and then fliped again but i got out of there: o and thanks for helping me when the car died…my thanks to you was hitting your shoe =P anywho still never left a commet about the doll i understand that 2 cars are out now (i reccomend puting something on the battery or camras so they dont break off from players hitting eachother) but you never awnsered when i asked-what made you come up with the idea: i have to admit you are one creative guy!

OMGZ, Awesome idea tho,
Get a couple helium balloons(blimp shaped ones if you want)
Tie a 3ft piece of string from the cars to the balloons, and attach the camera to the balloons, that way it’s like 3rd person style.

I like the idea that lilpunk1302 had, about only having live feed for those that are quite near the front of the line. I do the same, and this’ll be eating up my internet connection when i’m not even using it. Either that, or turning the feed off, either of those would be great.
Also, keep up the good work! I don’t see how you have time to work, there seems to be someone getting stuck or flipping over evey 5 minutes, even more often now that there are two car! Keep it up! ^_^

To answer questions/comments about when the cars are on:
1. Again, there is no guaranteed schedule for the car.
2. I do my level best to turn the cars on for a few hours after 5pm GMT-5 every weekday, but that’s not a promise that they will be on exacty at 5pm.
3. If you don’t know what/where GMT-5 is, find your local school administrator, and kick him/her in the knee.
4. On occasion, the posted online time might change (although this has happened only twice since I put the cars online).

Yup… the cars have been offline a lot over the past week. I have a major project launch happening, and like I keep saying, work comes first every time.
That said, I have to admit that the complaints about when the cars are or aren’t online have gotten old fast. Many of the comments made here about that have been deleted, mainly because people have been flat-out rude and offensive about it.
I’ve said over and over that the cars are just a hobby project of mine, but people seem to think that I owe them something, and that I’m somehow obligated to have the cars online when they want them online. If I wanted to allow the general public to make demands of me, I’d be a waiter, not a programmer.
So, I’m closing the cars to the public for the time being. I might make them available again in the future, but no promises about when (or if).

No, the cars aren’t gone forever. I have a new baby boy, and he’s getting all of my time for the time being (all of it, including the time I’d otherwise use for sleep
).
The cars will be back when I come back to work… maybe another two weeks or so, depending on how fast we get the eating/sleeping schedule down.

Yeah… the cars have been offline for a while now. It’s not that I don’t want to put them back online, it’s just that life is busy (career and family first… right?), and I just haven’t been able to find the time for it lately.
I hope to have them back on some sort of limited basis in the next month or so, so stay tuned.

hey jay! back again…seem now all there is to do is post these blogs…meh, never-the-less i will be back from time to time to see what’s happening, you never know…i might just be able to go on again! oh well, still having fun with the family and jobs? ahh the good life eh? =p . mabey i will just buy my own rc car…or a new one… i have gotten about 3 of them scince i first played this! still, months?! man your life must be busy! i normaly last for 3 months max of no cpu or just sitting around with free time… but thats only during summer vacation!

Sorry for the long [really long] delay in putting the cars back on. In recent months I’ve moved my office, and the new digs don’t offer the same amount of free floor space as the old place did.
With that in mind, it might be quite a while until the cars come back. It’s not a matter of desire, but really, just a matter of logistics. In the meantime, I’m working on a replacement for the cars… something a bit different to play with.

Hey great toy while it lasted.
It’s too bad that people get greedy and complain when something FREE is available. Most of them are nothing but snotnosed punks anyway who think the world owes them. ( the ones who complain)
I’m sure you have figured that out by now.
Again, great site and hope the car or whatever you decide is next is up and running again in the future.

i used to drive the car nonstopppp. my cousin and i used to be talking on AIM and be like “WOWWW this is so fun, that was cool what you just did” and stuff like that haha. then it went offline and hasn’t been up sinceeeee. i know youre busy but it neeeds to come back

After a year of collecting dust, the cars are back online. The office I was in for the last year wasn’t a suitable space for the cars, but my new office is.
